Make Your Summer Vacation Both Fun AND Healthy!

Make Your Summer Vacation Both Fun AND Healthy!

Your vacation is booked, your bags are packed, the dog is safe at doggy daycare – you’re ready to hit the road. You and your family have been planning this vacation for months now and goodness knows everyone needs a break. For most of us, a summer vacation is the ideal opportunity to kick back, relax, and live life a bit more freely. This is great and we want you to do this. Have fun. Do things you normally wouldn’t do. Sleep in. Stay in your swimsuit all day lounging at the beach. Shop till you drop. Ride every rollercoaster in the park and enjoy a sweet treat (or two). Whatever you do on your summer vacation – above all else – have fun.
But… (yes, there is always a but…) while we’re all about having fun, and living life large – we do want you to make sure that you’re doing all you can to stay healthy on your trip. There is nothing worse than having an amazing holiday and then returning to the office with the dreaded summer cold or overdoing it on your vacation to the point where you’re completely exhausted. And above all else, you definitely want to make sure your kids stay healthy and injury free. So, yes, have fun – but we encourage you to also follow the healthy travel tips that we’ve compiled. We’re not trying to take the fun out of your vacation, trust us, the entire AHCC team loves to kick back, relax, and have fun, but we also know what it’s like to accidentally overdo it and then pay the price once we’re home.

Take Your Supplements

This could also be rephrased as: stick to your supplement routine. Don’t stop taking your natural supplements like AHCC when you’re on vacation. In fact, your body is going to need an extra immune system boost during your trip. Pack your supplements, take them just as you would at home, and pay attention to any signals that you’re starting to feel run-down.
This could be signs that you need to get some extra rest and make the full-day at the amusement park a half-day or maybe a reminder that ice cream for breakfast can’t happen every day. Take your supplements – keep your immune system strong – so you can be ready for fun-filled vacation. Remember to Sleep

We all tend to pack our vacation days with as many hours of fun and activities as possible. This often means we’re on the go from early in the morning to quite late at night. You know how this often ends up – tired and cranky kids and tired and cranky adults. This combination is not what you want on your vacation. So, remember to sleep. It’s especially important that your kids get plenty of sleep each night so they don’t get run-down and exhausted.
Your immune system relies on your getting enough sleep so it has the chance to rebuild and prepare for the next day. You don’t need to be out late every night – take the opportunity to get some take-out and watch a movie or to just hang out by the pool or to sit out on the deck and enjoy the quiet.

Eat Right

When we’re on vacation we have a tendency to say to ourselves “ah, it’s okay – we’re on vacation.” And yes, it is okay – you are on vacation. But don’t let this be an excuse to skip breakfast or to eat donuts every day for breakfast. Try to remember that vegetables are still an important food group. We don’t want you skipping out on local favorites or passing up on a delicious bowl of gelato or a tasty lobster roll – but we do want you to remember that your body has needs as well.
These needs include a healthy breakfast (most days), fruits, vegetables and some good sources of protein. Eat the pizza, enjoy the gelato, share some candy, or eat a snow cone (an AHCC staff favorite). You can eat what you enjoy as long as you keep in mind that your body needs healthy fuel to keep you energized for whatever activities you have planned.
