A Closer Look at Your Liver

A Closer Look at Your Liver

The liver is one of the most important organs we have. In fact, of all the organs in our body, the liver has the longest list of responsibilities. When it comes to our health and well-being, most of us don’t automatically think of our liver. This is why today, we want to remind you of how vital your liver is to your health, wellness, and longevity. Your liver is responsible for: detoxifying your blood, metabolizing carbohydrates and lipids, synthesizing protein, and secreting bile. Because of this crucial list of responsibilities, any injury or illness to your liver is very serious.
The reality is that liver disease is very common in North America. Annually thousands of people die from hepatitis C, liver cancer, cirrhosis and other chronic liver diseases. It is this sad reality that has so many scientists and researchers deeply interested in the liver and how to best protect it from harm and disease.

Liver Disease

Alcohol, fast food, pharmaceutical use, chemicals – this is just a short list of how your liver can be injured. With our fast-paced and social lifestyle, more and more people are turning to fast food and consuming more alcohol. When you factor in our over-reliance on prescription drugs and the increased number of chemicals in our food – the liver is under heavy pressure when it’s trying to keep us healthy and well. When this happens, we get sick. Our immune system becomes suppressed and we cannot fight off the liver illness. As a result, we are often prescribed more pharmaceuticals, creating a vicious cycle of continually harming the liver.
This is where AHCC comes in. As a natural supplement that works with your body to increase your immune system response, AHCC can help you get and stay healthy. Research has shown that AHCC has a pronounced ability to protect against chemically-induced liver injuries. In numerous studies, rats pre-treated with AHCC were spared from liver damage and showed improved survival rates when administered liver-toxic chemicals and lethal substances. This is good news when we think of the toxins our body intakes from day to day.

Liver Cancer

You may know someone who has been diagnosed with liver cancer. The sad truth of this cancer is that it is very hard to diagnose and treat. The overall five-year relative liver cancer survival rate is only 9 percent. Because of this, the typical treatment goals for someone suffering from liver cancer is to focus on improving quality of life – rather than curing the disease.
The good news is that recent studies have suggested that AHCC might help to prolong the survival and quality of life of liver cancer patients. In a ground-breaking AHCC trial published in 2002 (Journal of Hepatology), about half of the 269 enrolled liver cancer patients took AHCC post-surgery and the other half did not. After ten years, 34.5 percent of the AHCC patients experienced a cancer recurrence, compared to 61 percent of the control group. As well, 46.8 per cent of the patients in the control group passed away 10 years later while only 20.4 per cent of the AHCC group had died.

You and Your Health
